We Build Fast Cars

This is a dedicated page for the 1973 Holden HQ Monaro re-build named SHQRP. It is a custom car build that features a wide body modification and a lot more. We made the site to help people understand the long journey we have been on with this build and the people and suppliers involved. We have formed terrific relationships with our builder, DownTown Kustoms, other people involved in the build & our suppliers of products and parts. We have fun to build this car and look forward to drive it all over Australia.

Some of our car suppliers are also great Australian based Companies and have become very well known in developing and exporting their Products. Harrop Engineering is one company we feature products from. The Supercharger and Brakes set up is from them. They also sell the legendary brand of cast wheels Forgeline from America. One key focus on our car was making sure it was well insulated for heat and also less noisy inside the car and we selected products from DCI Performance Products to address these needs. They are a terrific Aussie Company who export all over the world. PPG Paints was selected and used for the Paint and the team from Sydney do a top job on helping to train the Auto Industry with state of the art booths and the PPG paint mixing process. The silver paint from them is named Brilliant Silver. It has worked a treat.

“If everything seems under control, you’re just not going fast enough”.

The Process

The Build Phase I

SHQRP is a highly customised 1973 Holden HQ LS Monaro with the base of a 2005 VZ Monaro interior. It now has Airide suspension and is powered by a LSX 376 b15 engine and a on top of that sits a Harrop 2300 Supercharger. But in the beginning.... it was a rust bucket Look at the pictures.

The Build Phase II

The widebody design keeps all the stuff we love about the Q’s design and the low set up is going to make the car stand out for sure but every aspect of this car and its engineering is made to work 100%.

The Build Phase III

In this phase we finally sorted out the engine block to use, our plan on electronics, supercharger suspension and clearances needed for the engine bay & wheels. Replacement of all sheet metal commenced.

The Build Phase IV

The widebody really starts to come to life in this Phase. We really are modifying all panels of the car with extra metal or removing GAPs as in the Nose Cone. Dropped the floor and built a deeper boot with a spacesaver spare wheel. The rear quarter panels look great thanks to Jamie at Kustom Metal Garage for all of the assistance and fine workmanship!

The Build Phase V

We moved onto the interior in this phase but did not make the progress expected. It was then back to the main shop to continue with other parts of the build and some time before we would come back to the interior again, post paint.

The Build Phase VI

With the main metalwork completed (many parts multiple times) we moved into body work and making everything synchronise and planning final steps.

The Build Phase VII

We have a new sponsor PPG Paints so check out their great products.
We have many links across the site.
